Ex. : According to the writer his characters are all misfits. D’après l’écrivain, ses personnages sont tous inadaptés.

• In the writer’s opinion/ view: selon le point de vue de l’écrivain.

Ex. : In the writer’s opinion society bears the blame for such a state of affairs. Selon le point de vue de l’écrivain, la société est responsable d’une telle situation.

• To condemn :

Ex. : The author condemns the society his characters live in. L’auteur condamne la société dans laquelle vivent ses personnages.

• To denounce : dénoncer.

Ex. : He denounces the social evils that plague the society he lives in. Il dénonce les fléaux sociaux qui gangrènent la société dans laquelle il vit.

• To reproach (someone) with (+ gérondif) : reprocher quelque chose (à quelqu’un).

Ex. : The main character reproaches society with being ruthless and harsh. Le personnage principal reproche à la société d’être impitoyable et cruelle.

• To blame for (+ gérondif) : accuser de,

Ex. : The protagonists blame their education for being inadequate. Les personnages reprochent à leur éducation d’être inadaptée.

• To focus on : attirer l’attention

Ex. : The narrator focuses on the main character’s weaknesses. Le narrateur attire l’attention sur les faiblesses du personnage principal.

• To emphasize : insister, mettre l’accent

Ex. : The setting emphasizes the dramatic intensity of the play. Le décor met l’accent sur l’intensité dramatique de la pièce.

• One/ we may assume that: on peut supposer/présumer

Ex. : We may assume that the film director chose black and white to reinforce the character’s dual personality. On peut supposer que le metteur en scène a choisit le noir et blanc pour accentuer le caractère double du personnage.

• To be made to understand : être amené à

Ex. : The audience is made to understand that things are no longer what they used to be. Le public est amené à comprendre que les choses ne seront plus les mêmes qu’avant.
